Morocco, Model Country in Transit, Reception for Migrants (UN Official)

Morocco, Model Country in Transit, Reception for Migrants (UN Official)

Morocco is a model country in terms of transit and reception for migrants, said, on Tuesday in Rabat, visiting UN Special Representative for International Migration, Louise Arbour.

"Being both a country of departure, transit and reception for migrants, Morocco is the kind of country that enables the examination of all aspects related to migration issues," Arbour said at the end of talks with Moroccan Deputy Minister in charge of Moroccans Living abroad and Migration Affairs, Abdelkrim Benatiq.

She also noted that, at the beginning of the preparation of a Global Compact on Migration, a United Nations process managed by the Member States for the establishment of a world-first pact on safe, orderly and regular migration, Morocco is "very involved in the co-presidency with Germany of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD)," scheduled for late June in Berlin.

For his part, Benatiq underlined that the visit of the UN official to Morocco, which is part of the strengthening of the cooperation relations between Morocco and the UN migration system, was an opportunity to discuss the new positioning of the Kingdom as a host country, a choice reflected in a migration policy based on a coherent, comprehensive, humanistic and responsible approach.

Justice Minister Meets UN Official on Preparations for Global Compact on Migration

Justice minister Mohamed Aujjar met, on Wednesday in Rabat, with UN Special Representative for International Migration Louise Arbour on preparations for the setting up of the Global Compact on Migration.

The meeting was an occasion to discuss the Global Compact on Migration which will be set up by the UN member states late 2018, Arbour told the press after the meeting.

The UN official underlined that Morocco is an important country given the fact that it acts as an origin, transit and host country for migrants, noting that the Kingdom boasts many migration policies that make it a model for countries which are poorly equipped to manage this issue.

Aujjar reiterated Morocco's will to position itself as a pioneer country in terms of migration inflow management at the African level, highlighting the interest the Kingdom takes in dealing with migration in a human and legal way.

Aujjar also recalled that, considering the growing migration crises, the UN named a UNSG representative to prepare international consensus on the international convention on migrant rights slated next September.
