AU PSC: Morocco Reiterates Full Commitment to Contributing to Emergence of Resilient, Sovereign Africa

Morocco reiterated on Wednesday, before the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU PSC) in Addis Ababa, its full commitment to contributing to the emergence of a resilient and sovereign Africa.

"Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco remains fully committed to contributing to the emergence of a resilient and sovereign Africa, capable of turning climate constraints into genuine opportunities for development and shared prosperity," the Moroccan delegation emphasized during a public session of the AU PSC on the link between climate change, peace, and security.

The Moroccan delegation also noted that, in continuation of efforts to strengthen climate resilience, the Kingdom reaffirms its full readiness to work closely with African stakeholders, as well as international partners, to jointly address climate challenges and lay the foundations for African climate sovereignty, thereby consolidating peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.

Furthermore, it recalled that Morocco’s climate strategy, while rooted in ambitious national actions, is firmly framed within a continental dimension, reflecting the Kingdom’s African vocation.

This strategy reflects a deep conviction: Africa can only meet climate challenges through a united, innovative, and coordinated response, the delegation stressed, adding that Morocco has always defended the principle that climate challenges transcend borders and call for a unified African response.

Since COP22 in Marrakech, the Kingdom has initiated the creation of three African Climate Commissions: the Congo Basin Commission, the Sahel Commission, and the Commission for African Island States, the delegation further noted, specifying that these platforms aim to mobilize funding, share best practices, and implement projects tailored to the specificities of each sub-region.

Morocco also actively supports several flagship initiatives, namely the African Agriculture Adaptation Initiative (AAA), the African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI), and the African Adaptation Initiative (AAI), the same source underscored, emphasizing that, through the Climate Change Competence Centre (4C Morocco), the Kingdom provides technical, institutional, and scientific support, promotes South-South cooperation, and contributes to the development of regional programs adapted to local needs.

The Moroccan delegation further indicated that special attention is given to African youth and women, genuine drivers of transformation, to ensure local and sustainable ownership of climate policies.

At the multilateral level, Morocco mobilizes its climate diplomacy within the African Union, the United Nations, and international forums to defend African priorities, particularly the recognition of climate justice, equitable access to green financing, and the establishment of effective technology transfer mechanisms suited to African realities, the same source added.

Morocco strives to make the Atlantic Ocean a space of shared resilience, integrating the environmental dimension within the framework of the Royal Atlantic Initiative, according to the same source.
