The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi and the President of the National Foundation of Museums (FNM), Mehdi Qotbi, presided over the signing of a partnership and cooperation agreement on Wednesday at the DGSN headquarters in Rabat.

The agreement concerns the security of national museums and the protection of the Kingdom’s cultural and civilizational heritage against various forms of theft, forgery and illicit trafficking.

The agreement aims to establish institutional cooperation between the National Security services and the FNM to protect the country’s cultural and museum heritage and strengthen collaboration and coordination in detecting, preventing and combating crimes targeting this heritage, according to a joint statement issued by the DGSN and the National Foundation of Museums.

It also places particular emphasis on combating the forgery of archaeological and artistic works, as well as their illicit trafficking.

The agreement also provides for the establishment of an organizational and institutional mechanism to ensure the physical security of national institutions and museums, as well as to provide the necessary security arrangements and support for the transportation of archaeological objects and artefacts, the same source noted.

Regarding capacity-building and ongoing training, the agreement provides for the exchange of expertise and experience between the two parties in handling artworks and archaeological objects of historical value, as well as in identifying the criminal methods used to forge and illegally traffic these items, the statement added.

As part of this cooperation, the FNM will provide guidance and technical support to help enrich the National Security Museum, with the particular aim of promoting the institutional history of the national security services, while drawing on the experience of the country’s national museums.

During the signing ceremony, the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance and the President of the National Foundation of Museums emphasized the great importance of the partnership between the two parties, which places the preservation of Morocco’s tangible and historical heritage at the heart of its priorities.

They noted that protecting the national heritage is a shared responsibility, based on complementarity between security and preventive functions and cultural and museum-related missions, in the service of preserving the Kingdom’s identity.
