WHA: Health Minister Meets with WHO Director-General in Geneva

Morocco’s Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tehraoui, met Wednesday in Geneva with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA).

During their discussion, Tehraoui reaffirmed Morocco’s strong commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to advancing the royal initiative to reform the national healthcare system. The reform follows a comprehensive vision aimed at promoting health equity, expanding universal health coverage, enhancing service quality, improving infrastructure, and investing in human capital.

He also highlighted Morocco’s dedication to deepening its cooperation with the WHO through a practical, results-driven approach focused on achieving national health sovereignty. Key efforts include boosting local production of medicines and vaccines, in line with the New Development Model and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In this context, the minister presented Morocco’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for health product manufacturing. He spotlighted the "Marbio" project, an innovative initiative designed to strengthen Africa’s health sovereignty through technology transfer and localized production to benefit countries across the Global South.

For his part, Dr. Tedros praised Morocco’s “significant progress” in the health sector, commending the pace of ongoing reforms and the country’s “serious commitment” to health security at both the regional and global levels. He also recognized Morocco’s active and effective role as a member of the WHO Executive Board for the 2022–2025 term.

The organization's chief reaffirmed WHO's readiness to continue and strengthen its partnership with Morocco by supporting the implementation of its strategic health projects, particularly in capacity building, localization of pharmaceutical and vaccine industries, and expansion of health coverage programs.

The meeting took place as part of Morocco’s participation in the 78th session of the World Health Assembly (May 19–27), which this year is marked by the adoption of a new international agreement on pandemic preparedness and response.
