Sustainable Development: Morocco & Monaco Share Common Long-Term Strategic Vision- Oceanographic Institute DG

The Kingdom of Morocco and the Principality of Monaco share a common long-term strategic vision for sustainable development, emphasized Robert Calcagno, Director General of the Oceanographic Institute – Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation, on Tuesday in Monaco.

Speaking at a workshop ahead of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, scheduled for June 7–8 in Monaco, Calcagno praised the ongoing commitment of both countries to ocean and biodiversity preservation, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.

"We have a very active partnership with the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, in addition to various other collaborations with the Kingdom, particularly around the development of marine protected areas,” Calcagno stated.

These efforts take on particular significance in the lead-up to the United Nations Ocean Conference, set to take place from June 9 to 13 in Nice—a major milestone for collective action in support of marine ecosystems, he highlighted.

In this context, he noted that most Mediterranean countries will participate in the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, emphasizing that one of the forum’s main goals will be to mobilize funding for the southern Mediterranean shore.

"This forum will also serve as a valuable platform for establishing concrete partnerships and investment opportunities in the blue economy. By combining hybrid financing—mixing private capital, public funds, and multilateral support—we can drive sustainable economic activity," he added.

Calcagno also stressed the need for tangible progress, especially in the area of wastewater treatment, which urgently requires strengthening, as well as in fostering sustainable economic activities.
