Morocco highlighted, on Tuesday in Geneva, the progress it has achieved at the national level in the fields of industrial property and copyright, while reaffirming its commitment to the strategic role of intellectual property as a driver of innovation, competitiveness, creativity, and sustainable development.
In a statement delivered on behalf of Morocco during the 68th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Director General of the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC), Abdelaziz Babqiqi, underscored WIPO's central role in supporting technology transfer, innovation, and the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of developing countries, enabling them to address global challenges, including economic transformations, the effects of climate change, and threats to biodiversity.
On industrial property, Babqiqi said Morocco is continuing to implement its national strategy through a roadmap adopted by OMPIC, focused on strengthening innovation and industrial property, accelerating the digital transformation of services, enhancing capacities, and supporting businesses, researchers, universities, and startups.
He noted that the results achieved in 2025 reflect the sustained momentum of Morocco's industrial property sector. Applications for trademarks, industrial designs, and patents continued to increase, while the digitization rate of OMPIC's services exceeded 95%.
Morocco's achievements have also received international recognition, with the Kingdom climbing nine places in the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII), further strengthening its standing at both the African and Arab levels, he added.
Babqiqi also said Morocco is pursuing its efforts through its network of Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs), the "IP Marketplace" platform, and the Moroccan Intellectual Property Academy. In close cooperation with WIPO, several regional projects are currently being implemented, including the launch of a master's degree program in intellectual property and innovation.
Regarding copyright, the OMPIC chief said Morocco reached an important milestone with the adoption on June 4, 2026, of Bill No. 013.26, which addresses digital transformation, strengthens anti-piracy mechanisms, and establishes a rights-holder remuneration system aligned with international standards.
The Moroccan Copyright and Neighboring Rights Office (BMDAV) has also begun implementing the reprography remuneration system, a measure that strengthens the collective rights management framework, ensures fair compensation for authors, writers, publishers, journalists, and press companies, and supports the publishing, media, and cultural and creative industries, he added.
The official reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to actively contributing to WIPO's work and to further strengthening its cooperation with the Organization and all Member States to promote a more effective and inclusive intellectual property system that supports economic, social, and cultural development.
The 68th WIPO Assemblies are being held from July 7 to 15 in Geneva and online, with the participation of a Moroccan delegation that includes, in addition to Babqiqi, Acting Director of the BMDAV Dalal Mhamdi Alaoui, as well as representatives of Morocco's Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.
During the Assemblies, Member States are expected to review key issues related to the Organization's activities, including the budget, the development of the international intellectual property system, the work of its specialized committees, and improvements to global intellectual property registration and protection services.
With 193 Member States, WIPO plays a leading role in fostering a balanced and effective global intellectual property ecosystem aimed at promoting innovation and creativity for a better and more sustainable future.
