Morocco-EU Fisheries Agreement, Crucial For Spain

The fisheries agreement signed last July in Rabat between Morocco and the European Union is "fundamental" for Spain, said on Monday Spain's minister of agriculture, food and environment, Miguel Arias Canete.

The fisheries sector is very important for Spain and the fisheries agreement is fundamental for the sector", said the minister in a conference held by Spanish daily "La Razon".

He added that he asked all Spanish political parties represented in the European parliament to defend the agreement ratification.

The four-year agreement will enter into force once each of the two parties will have accomplished the needed procedures, mainly endorsement by the Moroccan and the European parliament.

The deal would allow around 120 EU vessels access to Moroccan waters, while the EU would give Morocco 40 million euro a year.
