Relations between Mauritania and Morocco “are going through their best period” in recent years, Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, said on Wednesday in Rabat.

Speaking at a press conference following his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Mauritania’s head of diplomacy said that “the important meeting between the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and His Majesty King Mohammed VI has given a strong impetus to bilateral cooperation, which is now in a very high level.”

He said that his visit to Morocco is part of ongoing consultations and coordination between the two countries on all issues of common interest, both bilaterally and multilaterally.

Ould Merzoug also praised the “daily and permanent support at all levels” provided by Morocco to Mauritania during its mandate at the head of the African Union at Summit and Executive Council levels.

The Mauritanian minister noted that his talks with Bourita provided an opportunity to examine the prospects for bilateral cooperation and to consult on multilateral issues, expressing the determination of both parties to ensure the success of all projects in this area.
