The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) emphasized that the September 23 legislative elections in Morocco were conducted "in a free, credible, and transparent manner, in accordance with the applicable legal framework."
In a preliminary statement from its election observation mission, held in the Kingdom since September 15, the OIF "wishes to commend the participation of Moroccan voters, who fulfilled their civic duty by acting responsibly and demonstrating their commitment to the democratic exercise of their rights."
OIF’s statement, released on Monday, "commends the reforms aimed at ensuring that the Moroccan electoral system complies with international standards," noting that "the electoral legal framework in effect for these elections adheres to the principles of democratic elections."
In this context, the OIF electoral mission observes that "changes have been made to this legal framework, aimed specifically at strengthening the integrity of candidates as well as the participation of women and young people, notably through an incentive-based funding mechanism for political parties."
The legislation governing the broadcast media, the preliminary statement continued, "guarantees equitable access for political parties and balanced news coverage during election periods," noting that "the main institutions responsible for organizing and overseeing elections and regulating the media have demonstrated a thorough understanding of their duties and shown consistent commitment throughout the election campaign."
Led by Ambassador of the Republic of Cameroon to France and Personal Representative of the Head of State to the OIF André-Magnus Ekoumou, the mission included the President of the High Court of Justice and a member of Benin’s Constitutional Court; a Member of the House of Commons of Canada and a member of the Network of Young Parliamentarians of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie; as well as Francophone experts from member states and governments of the Organization.
