Paris: Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Political Solution Enabling Libya to Regain Stability

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Nasser Bourita reaffirmed, on Tuesday in Paris, Morocco's commitment to a political, consensual and lasting solution that would enable Libya to regain its stability, within the framework of its indivisible unity, irrefutable sovereignty and full and complete territorial integrity.

In a speech before the International Conference on Libya, held at the Elysée under the aegis of the United Nations, the minister underlined the Kingdom's permanent commitment to Libya and its people, as well as its constant concern to see this sister country find its way back to peace, stability and development.

"The Maghreb needs a stable Libya, just as Europe needs a stable Maghreb", stressed Bourita. He also conveyed to the participants the greetings of HM King Mohammed VI who, he said, "follows with the greatest attention the developments of the situation in Libya, and who provides all His support to your initiative".

After commending France's efforts, under the chairmanship of President Emmanuel Macron, to move forward towards the resolution of the crisis in Libya, the minister pointed out that this Conference came at the right time to recall that the status quo could not be an option, the fratricidal divisions in Libya are not inevitable and that the prolongation of the conflict in this brotherly country is not a reason to live with it.

"On the contrary, it is a continuous motivation to redouble efforts to bring Libyan protagonists closer together," Bourita said, reiterating Morocco's commitment to a political, consensual and lasting solution, which, he said, "must be the horizon and perspective of all settlement efforts in this country.

The Moroccan official also stressed the importance of the elections in Libya as "they are a step towards the solution. They must be well prepared, meticulously and serenely", he underlined.

"The transitional phase must also be managed with sensitivity", he noted, stressing in particular the need to preserve the credibility of the protagonists, ensure that their speeches are followed by concrete action and set up a mechanism to monitor commitments.
