AMSSNuR Highlights Morocco's Experience with Emergencies Triggered by Nuclear Safety Events

Director general of the Moroccan Agency for nuclear and radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), Khammar Mrabit has recently presented Morocco's experience in organizing the Convex-3 crisis exercise in 2013, entitled Bab Al Maghrib, during a webinar on emergencies triggered by nuclear safety events.

A total of 59 member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA) and 9 international organizations participated in this exercise initiated jointly with IAEA, the Moroccan agency said in a statement.

Mrabit, who simultaneously chairs the International Network for Education and Training in Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response (iNET-EPR), highlighted, during this recent webinar organized by the IAEA in collaboration with the European Union's law enforcement agency (EUROPOL), the objectives of this exercise, which took place in the Kingdom, namely, inter alia, to test the notification and activation mechanisms and to assess coordination between stakeholders.

According to an AMSSNur statement, it is also a matter of testing arrangements for the provision of technical assistance at the national level and for the request for international assistance in this field and to assess the effectiveness of the national response system in the event of a nuclear or radiological emergency.

At the international level, the aim was to enable member States to evaluate the response system in case of a radiological emergency triggered by a nuclear safety event, to assess the international emergency management system and to identify good practices and areas for improvement at the multilateral level, he explained.

The director general of AMSSNur also indicated that nationally, the national nuclear or radiological emergency response plan, which is in the process of being finalized, has been established in collaboration with all relevant national agencies, while complying with IAEA requirements in terms of preparedness and response to nuclear or radiological emergencies.
