17th Gymnasiade Opens in Marrakech


The 17th Gymnasiade, an international major school sport event, kicked off Thursday evening at Marrakech's Grand Stade.

Gymnasiade, which is organized under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI until May 9 in Marrakech and Casablanca, is bringing together some 3000 athletes aged between 15 and 18 years from 58 countries.

Morocco is represented in this event by a delegation composed of 252 students, 56 coaches and 7 sports technicians.

The program includes 18 sports: archery, athletics, chess, fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, aerobics, judo, karate, swimming, tennis, wrestling, box, cycling, golf, petanque, surfing, taekwondo.

The Gymnasiade is organized by the International School Sport Federation (ISF). It is a springboard to qualification for the Youth Olympic Games, which will be held on October 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The first edition of the Gymnasiade was held in 1974 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
